The below tours are available for onsite delegates to book at an additional cost, where applicable. Prices are in Australian Dollars and include GST.

You can book these when registering or add them to your registration at a later date. Please note tours have capped numbers and are available on a “first come, first served basis”.

Most tours also require minimum numbers to be met to proceed.

Pre-Symposium Tour
Sunday 19 February 2023
CSIRO Australian National Algae Culture Collection

Time: Three tours of 35 – 40 minutes will take place at the following times:

2 – 2.40 pm
2.40 – 3.20 pm
3.20 – 4 pm

Cost: Free to attend; limited to 20 people per tour

Attendees will visit the CSIRO Australian National Algae Culture Collection. The algae collection is a unique resource of Australian biodiversity, containing living cultures of marine and freshwater species from most microalgal classes. Our strains have been sourced from tropical Australia to Antarctica.

Subject to prevailing COVID-19 access protocols managed by CSIRO, interested delegates need to approve that their registration details will be passed on to CSIRO. Furthermore, delegates will be subject to Tasmanian State Government COVID-19 regulations and restrictions.

Attendees will make their own way to and from CSIRO which is located at Castray Esplanade, Battery Point.

This tour takes guests around the waterfront with short stops and information while getting in some exercise. Includes historic Hunter St and the famous IXL Jam Factory, Hobart waterfront and significant city locations interspersed with stories recalling the good, the bad and the scandalous characters of Hobart’s past.

Mid-Symposium Tours

Hobart History, People & Places Walking Tour

Time: 10:00 – 12:00

This is an extensive walking tour including the historic Hunter St, Hobart waterfront, significant city locations & Salamanca Place. It features wonderful stories about the hard working convicts, explorers, entrepreneurs, villains and heroes of this convict-built city. Hobart’s waterfront was where it all started for Europeans in Tasmania. This tour follows the waterfront, and a couple of blocks into town, from the historic Henry Jones IXL jam factory to Australia’s only Georgian corner, and on through town to beautiful Salamanca, taking in the wonders of an historic city, with well-preserved Georgian and Victorian architecture.

Some of the locations will overlap with the morning walks but this is a much more in-depth tour.

Iron Pot Cruises is a 2½ hour cruise exploring the renowned waterways that influence Hobart’s lifestyle. Visit Australia’s oldest lighthouse, circumnavigate Betsey Island and discover the city’s rich maritime past.

Cruising down the Derwent River you’ll pass historic Battery Point, now one of Tasmania’s premium residential addresses. You’ll see well-known landmarks like the iconic Wrest Point Casino and the Shot Tower. Further south, you’ll truly appreciate the scale of Mount Wellington as it towers over the city.

Bonorong is a sanctuary for wildlife run by a passionate team of like-minded people. We’re a social enterprise: a little business with a big heart. The skills and funds generated through the Sanctuary allow us to proactively address problems in our surrounding environment and communities.

A visit to Bonorong is a chance to come closer than ever to something wild and fragile. You’ll come face to face with animals that became extinct long ago in other parts of Australia – The same animals we’re working hard to protect now.

The tour includes return transfers, private tour, lunch (drinks purchased separately) and a time to enjoy the centre at leisure.

Diving

We can offer you a great diversity of world-class scuba diving sites in this area, including the famous Cathedral Cave, the historic wreck SS “Nord”, or the magical sponge garden at Sisters’ rocks. Come and dive with very playful Fur Seals or meet the bizarre Weedy Seadragon. We have sites suitable for divers of all levels of experience from novice to technical.

Our staff, several of whom are marine biologists, have extensive local knowledge from thousands of hours spent diving around the Tasmanian coast, and include professional underwater photographers and videographers.

Botany above water: A guided tour at Mount Field National Park

Time: 08:30 – 16:30

Duration: Approx. 8 hours

Immerse yourself in the ecology of an ancient Tasmanian forest with palaeobotanist and Tasmanian flora expert Professor Greg Jordan. Our bus will pick you up and take you to glorious Mount Field National Park, where Greg will guide you through what he calls his “backyard,” as you walk amongst some of the world’s tallest eucalypt forest and towering tree ferns, as well as a unique array of alpine vegetation. You’ll learn about the fascinating concept of palaeoendemics and view examples of some spectacularly ancient and rare plants along the way. You’re likely to spot wallabies, wombats, and even echidnas. After the walk, enjoy a beautiful picnic lunch of local Tasmanian produce, before returning to Hobart. Price includes transport, lunch, and park entry fees.
