Mona Museum

Mona Museum

The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is a must see destination in Hobart. It is the largest privately owned museum in Australia and houses antiquities, modern and contemporary art from the collection of the owner, David Walsh. Walsh has described the museum as a “subversive adult Disneyland“.  Located on the banks of the Derwent a short ferry trip from Hobart, Mona has three levels of underground galleries, which visitors explore with custom-built, handheld technology, called the O, that tells them about the artworks on display.

Mona is also home to two wineries and a brewery, several bars and restaurants, luxury accommodation pavilions, a library, a cemetery and a tennis court.

Suggested Itinerary:

If you’re in Tassie, it’s a must to go out and visit the iconic Mona Museum.
I’d suggest the following to fully experience what there is to offer:

  • Head to the wharf in Salamanca (12 Franklin Square Wharf, Hobart) to catch a short ferry trip over whilst enjoying the views that surround the River Derwent. This will cost you $25 return or if you’re feeling fancy, there’s a private lounge, bar and deck that includes drinks and food for a total of $60 return.
  • Upon arrival at the museum, check out the quirky art and afterwards maybe even a drink at the cellar door and a bite to eat along the grounds whilst enjoying the live music.
